Myoglobin is a protein with a molecular weight of 17.8KD. Its molecular structure is similar to hemoglobin, and it has the function of transporting and storing oxygen in muscle cells. Human myocardium and skeletal muscle contain a large amount of myoglobin, which is rarely in the blood of normal people. It is mainly metabolized and excreted by the kidney. When myocardium or striated muscle is damaged, myoglobin is released to the vascular system due to the rupture of cell membrane, and the myoglobin in serum can be significantly increased. Myoglobin is a biomarker that can quickly reflect myocardial necrosis. Compared with other substances such as lactate dehydrogenase, myoglobin has a smaller molecular weight, so it can integrate into the blood circulation faster. Determination of serum myoglobin can be used as an index for early diagnosis of myocardial infarction. The combined detection of troponin I (cTnI), myoglobin (myo) and creatine kinase isoenzyme (CK-MB) is of great value in the early diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
